Michaelangelo did it on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel; Leonardo da Vinci on the wall of a convent refectory. Mama Cakes does it on cakes.
What are we talking about? Painting! Whilst we don’t dare even to aspire to the talent or greatness of the famous artists, there’s something in all of us which loves dabbling with paint, from those first messy fingers and hand prints as a toddler. The exciting thing is that there are edible paints which can be used on fondant or royal icing and which create sublime effects ranging from subtle pastels to a bolder colour palate. Cakes can look gorgeous just painted, or a combination of three-dimensional sugar flowers with painted two-dimensional patterns can result in a stunningly decorated cake.
Hand painted cakes
A quick ‘Google’ and a plethora of beautiful images pops up on screen, with Pinterest not surprisingly showcasing some great ideas. There is a wide choice of hand painted cake suppliers around the UK, but most operate, as you’d expect, in a relatively local catchment and not all actually bake and ice the cake as well as painting it. Mama Cakes’ sponges are all baked fresh just a day or two before your event, meaning you can be confident that the cake has been made and decorated especially for you. This is also why we won’t overfill our order book and you need to place your order with us with plenty of advance notice.
We loved one of our latest wedding cake designs which had hand-painted details and edible teacups, and that got us thinking: how about an entire hand-painted dessert table? Your theme – say, for example, pink roses, perhaps picked up in the bridesmaids’ dresses and the bouquets – could be carried through from the cake to cake pops and desserts. We could paint pink roses on sugar paper and pop them on chocolate circles to decorate chocolate mousse; you could have pink sugar roses cascading down the main cake as well. Let your imagination run riot and we’ll translate it to the best of our abilities into decoration for your cake or cakes.
We don’t imagine that our paintings are going to last for centuries, like the works of the great artists have: if our cakes didn’t get eaten not only would they eventually go stale but we’d be disappointed that you and your guests hadn’t enjoyed our creation, which is after all designed to give enjoyment by being consumed once it’s been looked at and admired. And after all, if you love a cake or cake design that much you can always ask us to make another time… how about a re-creation of your original wedding cake for a wedding anniversary?
